The Guard Horse
Who needs a dog!
In 1985, I had a horse that we would hobble, and let him eat the tall grass around the house. Hobbles are like a pair of padded braces that are tied together and put on a horses front legs. They give the horse freedom, but it is supposed to stop them from galloping off. He would gladly roam around the yard, knowing he could only take small steps. Eventually, he taught himself to hop, and therefore got faster as he found the best grass to feast on.
If a car pulled into the yard, his curiosity would get the best of him, and he would hop over to it. That day a couple of my city friends had driven out for a visit. Kelly got out of the passenger side to go to the door, when she realized this horse was coming towards her! She immediately jumped back in the car and told her boyfriend, Dave, to go to the door and knock. The second he opened his door, that horse went around the car to his side. Dave jumped back into his driver’s seat.
I watched out the kitchen window for twenty minutes or so. Kelly would make a run for the stairs, then get scared and jump back in the car. I laughed like hell. The stairs were 4 feet in front of the car. Why have a dog when you have a lawn mower, guard horse and fertilizer all in one.😂
He’s laughing!
